Already renowned as a statesman, Thomas Jefferson in his retirement from government turned his attention to the founding of an institution of higher learning, the University of Virginia. UVA Professor Dr. Andrew Jackson O’Shaughnessy, author of

, will discuss Jefferson in retirement and the University of Virginia in its earliest years, specifically the conflict between “all men are created equal” and the institution of slavery.
